If you live in Long Beach, you’re probably one of those people who is always complaining about how bad the traffic is.  Well, we agree—there’s no denying that it’s terrible.  California is known to have some of the worst traffic in the U.S., and it’s particularly bad in Los Angeles.  Long Beach is really close to Los Angeles, so anything that happens there that creates traffic jams trickles down to Long Beach.  Traffic gets really bad whenever the Lakers win the championship game and have their parade, or when the president is in town.  We all love Obama’s visits but they can make it really difficult to get home, or to your storage unit, after a long day of work.

In our opinion, it’s better to talk about the times when there is less traffic rather than when there is a lot.  To be quite honest, you can only get one pocket of time during the day when you might not hit much traffic, and that’s from 9:30AM-11AM.  Before 9:30AM people are trying to get to work, and after 11AM, lunch time traffic starts.  After the typical lunch hour, people who don’t work full time are usually going home, and that traffic lasts until about 8PM.  If you’re living in Long Beach (or anywhere in California for that matter), we highly recommend finding a storage facility that allows for 24-hour access to your unit.  It’s a lot easier to access your storage unit when there’s no traffic that you have to sit through, especially if you go at odd times.

Construction

Traffic is also caused by construction in the area.  Heavy traffic and a high population in a small area means that roads get damaged quickly.  It feels like there’s always some type of construction going on, which only increases the traffic.  It sounds like the chicken and the egg problem all over again, doesn't it?  Try to find alternative routes to your storage facility so that if you do run into any construction, you can quickly take another route to save some time.

Salt isn’t just Bad for your Blood Pressure

Long Beach is a coastal city, so even though California has more of a dry, desert climate, the city experiences humidity during the summers.  In order to protect your things from damage caused by humidity, get a climate controlled unit.  We generally recommend that Californians opt for units with climate control because of the severe heat that it periodically experiences, especially during the summer.

Sea salt is another issue for residents of Long Beach.  The only things you should be storing in facilities close to the beach are things that are used at the beach.  Avoid storing antiques, paintings, cars, and any items that contain metal.  The ocean air’s high salt content is highly likely to damage the things that you store, so don’t risk putting your precious muscle car in there.  Besides, the beach is always crowded because of the hot weather, which means high traffic areas.  Let’s face it, traffic is California’s tragic flaw.

The Beach, Racing, and Food

Every year Long Beach hosts the Toyota Grand Prix.  This is a three day event that takes place in mid-April and is filled with races, concerts, food trucks, and wine bars.  This event started with a Formula 5000 race that became an international hit.  International car makers (Ferrari, Renault, Brabham) and internationally famous drivers come every year for the races, along with thousands of fans.  Over the three day period, about 175,000 fans attend the event.

Preparation for this event starts well in advance.  They start building the 1.97 mile race circuit track in February.  This means that vendors, car makers, and people hosting the concerts start storing stuff at storage facilities in the area early in the year.  If you’re looking to store your stuff in the area, make sure you grab a storage unit by January so you’re not scrambling to find a unit last minute.  Long Beach has 44 storage facilities, so finding a unit shouldn’t be too problematic.

If you do happen to find a unit close to where the event will be held, be wary of yearly road closures that start a few days before the event.  Major street and walkway closures occur during the week and the weekend in order to prep for the event, and because there’s a motorcycle stunt show and racecar showcase that takes place before the races begin.  The road closures also last all day during the event but open up some nights.  If you’ll need to access your unit in mid-April, find out what roads will be closed and the alternative routes before you go so you don’t get frustrated trying to find them while on the road.  And of course, as you may have already guessed, this event will inevitably increase (drum roll please…) traffic in the area.

Long Beach is a place where you can use your RV or boat year round.  The weather is beautiful, and there’s always a chance that it will be 80 degrees in the middle of December.  Putting your RV or boat in storage seems kind of unnecessary, but once we are done telling you some facts, it may seem like a good idea after all.  Plus, it’s not like you’re always getting to hit the beach or the campgrounds.  As fun as some toys are, they should be put away when they’re not being used.

Keep Calm and Store

Golden Shore RV Resort is one of the many beautiful RV parks in Long Beach.  This park is right on the coast and is in close proximity to the Queen Mary and Aquarium of the Pacific.  There are plenty of things to do in and around the park, including biking on the beach and barbecuing.  Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could do that all day?  But in order to enjoy these activities, you have to make sure you have all the things necessary to do so.  RV trips are a lot of fun, but packing for one of those trips requires a vacation of its own.  By the time you’re done gathering your firewood, bikes, clothes, fishing equipment, hygiene products, etc., chances are that you’ll be so tired you won’t even want to go anymore.  But don’t stress, we have a one-word solution for you:  storage.

Storco Self Storage is a facility that’s only 5.2 miles away from Golden Shore RV Resort and offers some great amenities.  Pricing is generally one of the biggest concerns for most people, so let’s start with that.  Storco offers discounts for military members, senior citizens, students, the police and fire departments, and for long-term storage.  They offer discounts for three and six month prepayments, which is great if you’re looking to store your RV for the winter.  They also have tenant insurance available, which makes your life easier because you won’t have to scramble to find a way to insure the contents of your unit.  It’s a great facility that’s close to the park and is likely to meet all of your storage needs.

Keeping Your RV Safe

Long Beach isn’t exactly the safest area for your RV.  Don’t get us wrong, it’s not super dangerous or anything and it’s a great place to live, but it does have a high annual property crime of 12,700 crimes.  You can’t exactly use a giant tablecloth to hide the massive RV sitting in front of your house, so you should probably put it in storage.  Putting your RV or boat in storage will protect it from damage from the weather and animals, being hit or scratched by a car, being stolen, or being damaged by kids playing in the streets.  Don’t be the guy/girl in the neighborhood that’s always yelling at kids to get away from his/her RV.  Keeping your RV indoors will also protect it from damage from the high content of salt in the ocean’s air.  Being so close to the ocean has a lot of perks, but nothing is perfect.

Students in Long Beach

California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) is one of the biggest schools in Long Beach.  It has an undergraduate population of 31,523 students, more than 300 registered student organizations, and covers an area of about 324 acres.  This school requires freshmen to live on campus unless they are commuting from their parents’ home.  This makes the use for storage almost inevitable.  With so many students living on campus, you’ll run out of space pretty quickly.

One great facility is College Storage Services, which is 4.3 miles away from campus.  This facility has been serving college campuses since 2008, so they really know what college students need.  They help to create student jobs on campus and reduce traffic congestion during move-in and move-out.  They also have a “retail-to-school” delivery service, which means they can get your retail purchase to your dorm room before you arrive in the Fall.  College Storage Services serves 19 colleges and universities in the area, including University of California, Los Angeles, Whittier College, Chapman University, Cal Poly Pomona, and many more.  This place offers some amazing amenities that will make students’ lives much easier and experience working with students, so we definitely recommend storing with them.

Being a part of the military means a lot of movement, and we’re not just talking about your training.  You and your family may have to change bases quite often, which can mean high moving costs.  Instead of taking your things with you every time you have a temporary move, start putting your things in self storage.  It’s a fast, easy way to keep all of your important belongings in one place, and Long Beach has 44 storage facilities that you can choose from.  Who says military personnel don’t have options?

Storage by the Beach

If you’re looking to store things like guns in your storage unit, find a unit that’s inland, that allows for gun storage, and is not on the beach.  As nice as it would be to take a stroll on the beach every time you’re visiting your unit, we would highly recommend against storing things that can be ruined by the high salt content in the ocean’s air.  Long Beach is a coastal city, so you have to be careful about where in the city you’re storing your things.  Items made out of metal can easily rust because of the salty air, and having a rusty gun can be dangerous for everyone that’s around it.  Don’t let your target practice go to waste because of a faulty gun!

Although there’s little humidity in California, coastal cities can get humid during the summer.  Humidity coupled with high temperatures is definitely a recipe for disaster.  If you’re storing your things in the city, rent a climate controlled storage unit so you don’t come back to a rocking chair that’s growing mold in all the wrong places.

A Base with No Space

Guns are not the only things you’ll be storing if you’re based at Camp Pendleton.  Camp Pendleton is one of the largest bases in the U.S., with 40 different units and an area of 315 square miles.  It’s a marine base and is known for its very intense amphibious training.  Most of its trainees and workers live on the base but there’s limited space.  There are about 37,000 active duty marines and sailors living on the base; 27% of family members live on the base and 73% live off the base.  The population and area are big enough for it to be a city on its own!  The base is coming to reach its full capacity, so new people that come to train have to stay in nearby hotels.  If there are so many people living on the base that new trainees are living elsewhere, we doubt that you’ll have enough room to keep your extra stuff with you.

If you’re looking for some extra room, consider storing your stuff at Oceanside EZ Storage, which is 10.3 miles away.  If this seems kind of far, check out Camp Pendleton Self Storage, which is only 1.9 miles away from the base.  This storage facility was actually made specifically for military members and their families, so you won’t feel like you’re leaving your belongings in the hands of strangers.

Access and Payments

Having 24-hour access to your storage unit may not seem like a big deal at first, but it can make your life a lot easier.  If you’re late getting home from training, or find that you’re being deployed early the next morning and you need to grab stuff from your storage unit, you can do so without giving it a second thought.  As a member of the military, the nature of the job creates a lot of limitations for you so opt for flexibility when you can.

Another important thing to sign up for is online bill pay.  This will allow you to make your payments from anywhere in the world.  If you’re deployed overseas and don’t have time to make the payments, you don’t have to worry about losing your stuff.  The government has made it so that storage facilities cannot auction off the contents of your items if you default on your payments while you’re deployed.  Just be sure to make the payments as soon as you get back and you’re good to go.
